The Tutoring Works

Nobody is going to automate the trusted adult a worried parent hands their child to. Tutoring is personal, local and recurring — a weekly book of students who stay for terms — and now one person can run the whole thing with AI drafting the lesson prep, the parent updates and the marketing.

AI-proof by design

An income AI can't take.

AI can explain a topic at midnight for free; it cannot notice a tired fourteen-year-old has stopped following, hold them to the work week after week, or sit in a parent's worry the night before results day. AI tutoring apps are real and getting better, so the honest moat is not the explaining — it is the trusted human, the exam-board craft that turns knowledge into marks, and a recurring weekly book that referrals keep filling. What AI changes is the back office: lesson prep, resources, parent updates and marketing that used to eat your evenings now take minutes, so you can teach more students or teach the ones you have with more left in the tank.

The headline feature

Run it with AI behind the scenes.

Every manual ships with an Excel toolkit and a 60-prompt AI library mapped to the real jobs of tutoring — so one person can run a serious operation without staff or evenings of admin.

ops

Lesson prep and resources in minutes

Draft practice questions, a worksheet or a first-pass lesson plan pitched at the student's board and tier — then check every one yourself before it reaches a child. Never put a child's name or details into a tool.

comms

Parent updates, handled

Turn rough lesson notes into a clear, warm progress update in two minutes instead of fifteen — the messages that keep parents re-signing and referring, drafted from a prompt and made to sound like you.

marketing

A profile that gets found

The prompt library drafts your platform and Google Business profile, a reply to an enquiry and a local Facebook post — specific to your subject, level and niche, ready for you to edit into your own voice.

admin

Booking and admin off your plate

Termly block invoices, cancellation terms and enquiry replies drafted in seconds, so you sell the slot and get paid up front without an evening of admin.

Start before you register

Your first £500 before you fill in a single form.

You do not need a website, a company or a marketing budget to earn your first few hundred pounds. The real first cost is an enhanced DBS check for working with children (roughly £40–£60, about two weeks to clear); the rest of the kit is a laptop, reliable internet and your subject knowledge, so a realistic start-up is under £200. The manual walks you from there to your first students the way it actually happens: a profile on one tutoring platform, a specific message to your own network and the school gate, and a helpful reply in a local Facebook group. Six weekly students at an average of £40 an hour is around £240 a week, term-time — and every one of them can refer another.

Honest questions

Answers, in plain English.

How do I start a tutoring business in the UK?

Pick the subject and level you know best, get an enhanced DBS check for working with children (around £40–£60, about two weeks to clear), and set up a clear profile on a tutoring platform. Then find your first students through that platform, your own network and the school gate, and a local Facebook group. You can teach online or in person, and you register as a sole trader with HMRC once the money is coming in. Start-up is realistically under £200. The Tutoring Works gives you the setup steps, the safeguarding basics, the profile scripts, the pricing and a week-by-week plan to your first students.

How much does a private tutor earn in the UK?

It depends on how many weekly students you hold and what you charge. Part-time with a few students is roughly £5,000–£20,000 a year; a full-time solo tutor with a full timetable typically earns £25,000–£45,000; and an established tutor with small groups, national online reach or an agency placing other tutors can pass £50,000. Rates in 2026 run £25–£45 an hour for primary and KS3, £30–£60 for GCSE, and £40–£80+ for A-level, specialist subjects and 11+.

Does AI replace private tutors in 2026?

No. AI tutoring apps are real, free or nearly free, and genuinely useful for explaining a single question at eleven at night — and that is worth being honest about. But the hard part of learning was never the explanation; it is a tired child actually doing the work week after week, exam technique that turns knowledge into marks, and the parent relationship. Those stay human. The tutors who do well in 2026 use AI to draft lesson prep, resources and parent updates, and spend the time saved on the teaching an app cannot do.

Do I need a DBS check or a teaching qualification to tutor?

You do not legally need QTS or a teaching qualification to tutor privately, though knowing your subject and being able to explain it are essential. Because you work with children you should get an enhanced DBS check, follow safe practice (a parent at home or in earshot, open-door or recorded online lessons), know basic safeguarding including who to tell if a child discloses something, and store children's and parents' data carefully under GDPR. Public liability insurance and clear terms are sensible from the start.

Do I need AI or technical skills to use this?

No. Tutoring is run with your subject knowledge, a laptop and a webcam. The AI prompt library simply lets you paste a prompt into any capable AI chat tool to draft a lesson plan, a worksheet, a parent update or your profile in seconds — which you then check and make your own. It compresses the prep and admin around the lessons; it does not teach the child, and it never holds their data.
