The Solo Consultant Works

AI is changing how consulting work gets delivered: it now does much of the research, drafting and analysis a junior used to do. What it cannot do is own the client relationship, carry the accountability, or make the judgement call a business is paying a trusted human for. A solo consultant who sells judgement and uses AI as a force-multiplier is more useful in 2026, not less.

AI-proof by design

An income AI can't take.

Consulting is honest about what is changing. AI can summarise a market, draft a proposal and produce a first-pass framework in minutes, so commodity advice is getting cheaper. But businesses do not pay a consultant for words on a page — they pay for someone who understands their problem, owns the outcome, and is accountable when it matters. Judgement, trust and the hard conversation stay human. The consultant who packages real expertise, owns the client relationship and uses AI to remove the grunt work bills more for outcomes and less for hours.

The headline feature

Run it with AI behind the scenes.

Every manual ships with an Excel toolkit and a 60-prompt AI library mapped to the real jobs of solo consulting — so one person can run a serious operation without staff or evenings of admin.

Start before you register

Your first £500 before you fill in a single form.

You do not need an office, a website, or a single pound of marketing spend to earn your first £500. The real start cost is the expertise you already have and one client who needs it — a laptop you own and professional indemnity cover are about all you must add. The manual walks you from activating your existing network and past employers to your first discovery call, your first proposal, and a paid engagement, so the money comes in before you spend anything building a brand.

Honest questions

Answers, in plain English.

How do I start a consulting business in the UK?

Define a sharp niche from expertise you have already earned, set up properly (most consultants trade through a limited company, with professional indemnity insurance and a written statement of work), then win your first clients through your existing network, past employers, referrals and LinkedIn. You can earn your first fees before spending anything on marketing. The Solo Consultant Works gives you the setup steps, the niche and pricing methods, and a week-by-week plan to your first paid engagement.

Is consulting still a good business in 2026?

Yes, but it is changing. AI now does much of the research, drafting and analysis, so commodity advice is being devalued. The consultants who thrive sell judgement, trust, accountability and outcomes that AI cannot, and use AI to deliver faster. A clear niche, a strong reputation and owned client relationships make a solo consultancy durable, and one person can now run a serious practice because AI handles the grunt work.

How much can a consultant earn in the UK?

Day rates run from £400 to £1,200 and up, with project fees often £2,000 to £20,000+ and monthly retainers £1,000 to £5,000+. Part-time or building, expect £15,000–£40,000 a year. A full-time solo consultant typically earns £50,000–£120,000, capped by billable days and rate. Premium or scaled practices with associates, products and high rates reach £150,000–£300,000+.

What about IR35?

IR35, or the off-payroll rules, can apply if you work for one client as if you were their employee, which changes how you are taxed. You stay outside it by keeping multiple clients, working on your own terms, and using proper contracts and statements of work that define scope, fees, IP and liability. The manual covers structure, IR35 and contracts in the setup chapter.

Will AI replace consultants?

AI replaces the commodity parts — research, drafting, first-pass analysis — not the consultant. Clients pay a human for judgement, a trusted relationship and accountability for the result, none of which AI carries. The honest position is that AI changes delivery: it makes a good consultant faster and lets one person bill more for outcomes. The manual treats AI as your force-multiplier, not your replacement.
