Listings that get found
Photograph an item, feed the notes to the prompt library, and get a keyword-rich title and honest description buyers actually search for — drafted in seconds, in your voice.
A Works Co. manual · No. 10
AI can write a listing, but it cannot go to the car-boot sale, spot the £2 item that sells for £18, or pack the parcel and put it in the post. eBay reselling is hands-on physical work — sourcing real stock and shipping real items — and your eye for value is the part no software can hand a beginner. AI just takes over the pricing research, the listings and the admin so one person can do more of the bit that pays.

AI-proof by design
Reselling is a physical product business, and that is its moat. The money is made out in the world — at car-boot sales, charity shops, auctions and house clearances — where your eye for what sells and what it is worth is the whole edge. AI can draft a keyword-rich title and a tidy description, but it cannot source the stock, judge the condition in your hands, or pack and post the item. As listing gets easier for everyone, the durable advantage moves further toward the things AI cannot do for you: knowing what to buy, buying it cheap, and running a tight list-pack-ship routine.
The headline feature
Every manual ships with an Excel toolkit and a 60-prompt AI library mapped to the real jobs of eBay reselling — so one person can run a serious operation without staff or evenings of admin.
Photograph an item, feed the notes to the prompt library, and get a keyword-rich title and honest description buyers actually search for — drafted in seconds, in your voice.
The prompts and the Pricing & Profit Calculator work from eBay 'sold' prices and the real fee maths, so every item clears a profit after the ~12.8% final-value fee, the ~£0.30 order fee and postage.
Polite replies to questions, despatch updates, and fair handling of returns and the occasional difficult buyer — drafted from a prompt, sent in seconds.
The toolkit tracks buy cost, sale price, fees and profit per item — so Self Assessment is a copy-paste, not an evening lost, now that eBay reports seller income to HMRC.
Start before you register
You do not need to register a company, rent storage, or spend much to make your first money. Start-up cost is low — roughly £100 to £500 for packing materials, a postage scale and basic storage — and the eBay account is free. You can begin by reselling things you already own: clear the loft and the cupboards, list them well, and learn the list-pack-ship routine on stock that cost you nothing. Once the buying-to-resell money is coming in, you register as a sole trader with HMRC and reinvest the profit into cheap stock.
UK-accurate, not guru noise
Packing materials, a postage scale, basic storage and a phone for photos. The eBay account is free.
Aim for at least £8–£15+ profit per item after the eBay fees (~12.8% + ~£0.30/order) and postage.
A solo operator sourcing and listing daily. Part-time is £2,000–£10,000; a scaled multi-channel operation reaches £80,000–£200,000+.
Buying to resell is trading. The £1,000 trading allowance covers tiny amounts; above it you register with HMRC. As a business seller, consumer law applies — a 14-day right to cancel and accurate descriptions. VAT threshold is £90,000.

Honest questions
Open a free eBay account, spend a small amount (£100–£500) on packing materials, a postage scale and basic storage, and start by listing items you already own to learn the routine. Then source cheap stock from charity shops, car-boot sales, auctions and house clearances, checking eBay 'sold' listings before you buy so you know what it is worth. You register as a sole trader with HMRC once you are buying to resell and earning above the £1,000 trading allowance. The eBay Reseller Works gives you the sourcing guide, pricing maths, listing method and a 90-day plan.
Selling your own unwanted possessions is not trading. Buying things in order to sell them at a profit is trading, and the profit is taxable. The £1,000 trading allowance covers only tiny amounts; above it you must register as a sole trader with HMRC and declare your income. Online marketplaces including eBay now report seller income to HMRC, so assume your sales are visible. As a business seller you must also follow consumer law, including a 14-day right to cancel under the Consumer Contracts Regulations and accurate item descriptions.
Be realistic: a part-time or hobby reseller earns roughly £2,000–£10,000 a year. A full-time solo operator who sources and lists daily typically earns £20,000–£50,000 a year. A scaled operation with storage, staff, volume and multiple channels can reach £80,000–£200,000 or more, but that is a real business with stock, space and labour behind it.
Price from eBay 'sold' listings — the actual selling prices, not what other sellers are asking. Aim for roughly 2–3× your buy price, or at least £8–£15+ profit per item after costs. The maths is: sale price, minus buy price, minus the eBay final-value fee of about 12.8% of the item-plus-postage total, minus about £0.30 per order, minus postage and packaging. The toolkit's Pricing & Profit Calculator does this for you so nothing sells at a loss.
No. Reselling is run with a phone, a postage scale and a sourcing trip. The AI prompt library simply lets you copy a prompt into ChatGPT or Claude to draft a keyword-rich listing from your photos, research what sells, or reply to a buyer in seconds. It speeds up the admin and the listings; it does not source the stock or pack the parcel — the parts that actually make the money.
