A round that plans itself
The Excel round planner and recurring-booking templates turn a list of dogs and pickup windows into an efficient daily route, within the council dogs-per-walker cap — no software subscription needed to start.
A Works Co. manual · No. 05
Nobody is going to automate the person a dog trusts on a wet Tuesday morning. Dog walking is hands-on, local and built on daily trust — about as AI-proof as work gets — and now one person can run a full round with AI handling the bookings, the comms and the marketing.

AI-proof by design
AI can draft a contract; it cannot walk four dogs through a park, read a tense moment between two of them, and keep everyone safe. The work is physical, local and built on trust — owners hand you their keys and their dogs, every day, for years. That makes it durable in a way a desk job built on tasks software now does is not. What AI changes is the back office: you no longer need staff or evenings of admin to run a serious round, plus the licensed sitting and boarding that sits on top of it.
The headline feature
Every manual ships with an Excel toolkit and a 95-prompt AI library mapped to the real jobs of dog walking and pet services — so one person can run a serious operation without staff or evenings of admin.
The Excel round planner and recurring-booking templates turn a list of dogs and pickup windows into an efficient daily route, within the council dogs-per-walker cap — no software subscription needed to start.
The post-walk photo-and-report message, 'we're on our way' texts, holiday-cover reminders and polite payment chasers — drafted from a prompt, sent in seconds.
Facebook community posts, a Google Business Profile description, vet and groomer referral notes and a leaflet — generated from the prompt library, ready to use.
Client and dog records, service agreements and the licence-readiness paperwork drafted from the toolkit, so the admin that used to need staff fits around the walks.
Start before you register
You do not need a licence, a website, or a penny of paid marketing to earn your first £500 walking dogs. With a £500–£1,500 starter kit — slip leads, harnesses, water bowls, towels, poo bags, a canine first-aid kit and safe transport in the car you already own — and a fortnight of meet-and-greets won through local Facebook groups, the manual walks you from your first trial walk to a small recurring round paid by standing order, before you scale into the licensed services.
UK-accurate, not guru noise
Slip leads, harnesses, water, towels, poo bags, a canine first-aid kit and safe dog transport (crate/guard/harness, Highway Code Rule 57).
Per 30–60 minute walk; group walks run £10–£15 per dog. Weekly standing orders are the recurring backbone.
Walking usually needs no licence but councils cap dogs-per-walker (often 4–6); home boarding and daycare need a council licence under the Animal Welfare (Licensing of Activities Involving Animals) Regulations 2018. Hold pet-business insurance (public liability, care-custody-control, key cover).
Walks plus sitting, high margin but capped by capacity; with staff or licensed daycare/boarding £100,000+ is possible. VAT registration only above £90,000 turnover.

Honest questions
Buy a basic kit (slip leads, harnesses, water, poo bags and a canine first-aid kit) for £500–£1,500, arrange safe dog transport in your car, and win your first clients through local Facebook groups and a meet-and-greet trial walk. You can earn your first money before you register anything; you register as a sole trader with HMRC once income is coming in. Hold pet-business insurance and check your council's rules before you start. The Dog Walking Works gives you the kit list, the meet-and-greet scripts, the pricing and a week-by-week plan to your first twenty clients.
Yes. It is a daily, recurring, hands-on service that AI and software cannot replace, and demand is steady from busy professionals, commuters and less-mobile owners. The change in 2026 is that one person can run a serious round alone, because AI handles the bookings, owner updates and marketing that used to need staff or long evenings, and the licensed sitting and boarding services stack extra income on top.
Dog walking itself usually does not need a licence, but many councils cap the number of dogs one person may walk in public (commonly four or six) and some require a permit for certain parks — always check your local council. A council licence is required for home boarding, doggy daycare and commercial boarding under the Animal Welfare (Licensing of Activities Involving Animals) Regulations 2018. The manual walks you through both the walking rules and the full licensing process.
A part-time round earns roughly £8,000–£18,000 a year. A full-time solo operator combining walks with pet sitting typically earns £25,000–£50,000 a year at a high margin, though income is capped by how many dogs you can safely handle. With staff or licensed daycare and boarding, revenue of £100,000 or more is possible.
You need specialist pet-business insurance covering public liability, care-custody-and-control (the animals in your charge), key cover (you hold customers' keys) and damage. Serious clients and some insurers also expect a DBS check, because you enter homes and hold keys, and a canine first-aid certificate. You must transport dogs safely under Highway Code Rule 57 using a crate, guard or harness. The manual sets out exactly what to arrange and in what order.
